Three Little Words

Three little words -- so often abused;
words that can alter one's life;
words with the power of life and death;
words that can rend one to strife.

Why do lying lips proclaim such words,
words that are sacred and pure?
They are used with such frequency and abandon
that their worth is equated with manure.

True lovers locked in love's embrace
should have special words that are pure
to express their true love, one to another
and know those words are assured

of having the sacredness of heart,
free from the lies of this world
that are so often spoken in love
only later to be readily unfurled.

These three little words,
so special...so true,
are said with such love in my voice
as I hold you close, and look in your eyes
and softly say 'I love you.'
