OLD SOULS
Far from the universe
beyond what we know
there's a waiting room
for tired old souls.
They gaze into heaven
on dark, starry nights
watch the golden gates open
see angels in flight.
Often they wonder
why they must wait
so tired and deserving,
ready to enter heaven's gate.
Finally one night
with the winds blowing cold
appeared a beautiful angel
wearing garments of gold.
"Hark, I am God's messenger
there's no need to fear,
but you must listen closely
this is important to hear."
"You have to go back
there's more you must learn
your life lessons aren't finished
heaven's entrance is earned."
"Oh no, thought the souls,
please not again
how many times must we suffer
when will it end?"
"Please listen closely
back to earth you must go
for another ride on life's highway
there's more seeds you must sow."
The souls said a prayer
then crossed the universe wide
but one felt a searing pain
deep, deep inside.
There was something missing
he didn't feel whole
just empty and lonely
missing half of his soul.
Somehow he lost it
when thrust into space
his most important part missing
disappeared without trace.
Then somewhere on earth
a new baby cried
when he drew his first breath
the old soul jumped inside
The child born knowing
the truth about life
was filled with deep wisdom
familiar with strife.
He'd been here before
his lessons nearly complete
life's pain and deep sorrow
he courageously meets.
But he knew he was missing
the mate to his soul
and wanted to find it
before growing old.
He'd search and he'd search
the whole world wide
until he found her again
and they stood side by side.
This time there's a chance
with the help of his mate
to complete life's final lesson
and enter heaven's gate.
