A Lesson in Love

I paced the dark empty halls
and sobbed through the lonely night,
begging our God up above
to spare your young, sweet life.

Why did we go to that party
where drugs and booze would be?
How could we have been so stupid?
Why couldn't we have seen?

The drugs and the booze flowed freely.
The party was really a blast
until you started choking
and said 'Baby, I'm not gonna last!

The paremedics came really quickly
and connected you to their machines.
They rushed you off to emergency;
to me, it was a horrible dream.

The doctors used all of their magic;
I even attempted to pray.
Now, it's the next day after,
and they're burying you today.

We were just kids only yesterday;
it's funny how time changes things.
Now, I feel so much older;
I finally learned a few things.
