Stay away from the tracks, sweet baby
stay away from the tracks
Don't take the short cut over the river
You take the long way back...
With the moon shining bright
at your high school dance
You looked just so beautiful
my heart was choked with romance
As we swayed across the floor
and I held you close and tight
You felt so good in my arms
it was just so right
Our whole lives lay ahead of us
our future looked so grand
You'd be my sweet, sweet baby
and I'd be your lovin' man
Then suddenly you told me
about our baby in your womb
And how you couldn't keep her
cause your Dad would fuss and fume
You said that he would make you
go long and far away
We would never see each other
or our child to love and play
As we stood there crying
and pondering our fate
And thinking of our baby
and a world chocked full of hate
You suddenly started running
your tears hurling to the ground
Screaming 'I just can't take it
if you both are not around'
I tried to catch you, Baby
but you ran like the wind in May
up to the trestle bridge
where the freight train runs each day
I heard the whistle blowing
begging you to stop
But you kept right on going
onto the tracks you plopped
I couldn't bear to watch
your beautiful body shred and torn
Now...as I stand here on this bridge
I'll be with you by tomorrow morn
Dedicated to young love
and foolish parents
